Other Products
In addition to alcoholic beverages, Altia offers other products such as technical ethanol, and animal feeds and starch. These are by-products from distillation of grain spirit produced at Altia’s Koskenkorva plant. The valuable raw material barley is utilised effectively in the plant’s process.
Altia uses Finnish barley to produce grain spirit as raw material for alcoholic beverages. The high-quality barley starch is a unique product and the world’s only barley-based starch. It is used to technical and food industry applications, for example as binding material for the paper and paperboard industry and in the brewing and food industry.
Animal feed for agriculture is generated as a by-product from the process. Altia works in close co-operation with the starch and feed customers and is constantly striving for generation of new applications in the food industry. Liquid and dry animal feeds are carefully documented and researched and they have high nutritional value and production results.
Altia has a significant market share in technical ethanol and ethanol-based product applications used in the industry. The product range includes pure and methylated ethanol and other solvents. The product categories consist for example of agricultural ethanol for food industry, pure or slightly methylated ethanol for industrial use, geothermal applications, disinfectant for food industry and other industrial solvents. Altia is the largest producer of organic ethanol for geothermal applications in Finland.
