Altia to apply for the conservation of Kurkisuo
Altia will apply for the conservation of Kurkisuo, which is located in an area that is within its ownership. The size of the area that is planned to become a conservation area is 144.1 hectares. Kurkisuo is located in the immediate area of the water supply source of Altia’s facility in Rajamäki, and the aim of the company is to protect the groundwater resources that are important to its business.
Hyvinkää’s Kurkisuo is a significant distribution area of endangered plant species and bog biotopes in the Uusimaa region. In spite of the surrounding trenching, many of the bog biotopes have remained in a pristine state. Kurkisuo is one of coastal Finland’s typical raised bogs, and is one of the ten most important bogs in the country.
Altia also has a private 7.5 hectare conservation area called Kaunissyrjä in Hyvinkää’s Petkelsuo, which is a part of the national bog conservation programme. Altia takes the conservation of groundwater and soil very seriously because it uses pure groundwater in the production of alcoholic drinks.
